Motor Test and Drive Commissioning: Define the Acceptance Scope
A buyer checklist for agreeing motor measurements, test conditions, drive data, and commissioning responsibilities before a sample build.
This guide helps buyers define the test records and commissioning information they need. It does not claim that PMDD Motor or a particular supplier owns specific test equipment or performs every test listed here.
Agree on evidence before the sample is built
For each requested measurement, write down the method, sample, fixture, operating point, acceptance limit, report format, and responsible party. Ask which records are already available and which require a separate test agreement.
A result without its test conditions can be difficult to compare. For example, torque and temperature depend on mounting, cooling, ambient conditions, duty, and measurement setup. Identify those conditions in the purchase specification.
Possible electrical and mechanical checks
Depending on the project, buyers may request:
- Winding resistance and phase balance, with instrument, temperature, and connection method stated.
- Inductance or back-EMF measurements, with frequency or speed and winding connection stated.
- Insulation or dielectric checks, with the applicable method and acceptance limit.
- Torque-speed or torque-current data at agreed points and under a defined mounting and cooling setup.
- Temperature, vibration, runout, or sound measurements when they matter to the machine.
This list is a discussion aid. It does not imply that each supplier has a dynamometer, a particular transducer range, or a standard report package.
Confirm drive and feedback responsibilities
Record the exact motor, drive, encoder, cables, controller version, supply, current limits, and control mode used during commissioning. Agree who provides motor data and who is responsible for parameter entry, phase order, encoder direction, electrical angle, current limits, and fault response.
Do not copy tuning or commutation values from another motor. A nominally similar frame or product family does not establish matching winding or feedback data.
Write acceptance criteria that can be checked
Use measurable limits and state how they will be verified. Separate motor acceptance from system acceptance: a motor test does not validate the machine’s structure, load, controls, wiring, or safety functions.
Before shipment, agree whether the buyer receives a pass/fail record, raw data, plots, calibration details, witness access, or only a supplier declaration. Include any retest process and handling of a failed sample in the purchase terms.
RFQ checklist
- Motor model and revision, drawings, and intended machine.
- Requested electrical, mechanical, thermal, or acoustic measurements.
- Fixture, mounting, cooling, ambient, operating points, and test duration.
- Measurement method, acceptance limits, and report format.
- Drive and encoder model, commissioning responsibilities, and fault limits.
- Sample count, witness or retest needs, and quotation scope.
Confirm the available supplier, equipment, test method, and records in writing. Do not treat an illustrative curve or software calculation as evidence of a physical motor test.
Share your target torque/speed, OD/ID or IEC frame envelope, or reference part number to initiate a project-specific engineering and RFQ scope review.
